Outrun The Sunlight
Outrun The Sunlight
Outrun the Sunlight is an instrumental metal band from Chicago, IL, who draws diverse influence from modern metal to post-rock, from groups such as The Contortionist , Cloudkicker , Caspian and Russian Circles . The band’s sound focuses on creating frisson from the listener, an experience felt when a song creates an overwhelming emotional response, usually resulting in shivers.

Formed as a studio project in 2011 by guitarists Austin Peters and Cody McCarty, the band released both “Architecture of the Cosmos EP” and “The Return of Inertia” in the same year. Signing with Rogue Records America in 2012, the duo re-released “ The Return of Inertia (Vocalist Version) ” which included vocalists from around the world, plus two bonus tracks. In 2014, the addition of drummer, Pedro Villegas, and bassist, Connor Grant, brought the band to the stage, and they released their second album “ Terrapin ," also on Rogue Records. Adrian Perez joined as keyboardist, who was in the band shortly, performing on “Live at Electrical Audio EP” and the “Stars in the Ocean” music video, both recorded in 2015. In 2016, after the departure of Perez, the band parted ways with Rogue Records, and went on to perform on Chicago internet music series, Audiotree, releasing the live album “ Outrun the Sunlight on Audiotree Live .” The band returned to that same studio to record their third release, “ Red Bird ,” which was the first instance that the group performed together on an album, released independently in 2017.
Aviations began as a passion project back in 2011 by James Knoerl (Drums) and Sam Harchik (Guitar). Upon meeting vocalist Adam Benjamin mid 2012 through mutual friends online, the group began work on a full length record amidst their studies at Berklee College of Music, tracking nearly everything in James & Sam’s apartment.
In the summer of 2012, James and Sam went to Zoinga Recording in Michigan to record live drums for their first record in a brisk 6 hour session with engineer Mick Maslowski. Mixed and produced by Sam once again from their Boston apartment, their first record titled “A Declaration of Sound” was finally released on Oct. 13th, 2012.
They generated a bit of popularity in the Boston prog and metal scene, playing several shows in support of this new music around New England. With a brief midwest tour in March of 2014, Aviations became a more active live band performing in several states for the first time, including some new music from their yet to be named sophomore release in their sets.
After a few more member changes the band continued work on their next release between finishing their studies at Berklee and various other entrepreneurial endeavors, such as session recording, record production and video production to name a few.
2016 finally saw a complete enough concept to announce “The Light Years” as the official title of the band’s sophomore album, with the first instrumental single “Dizziness Explained” released on Sept. 16th 2016.
While it was announced that the band had parted ways with vocalist Adam Benjamin, it turned out to be just a hiatus as the band took a break to focus on their perspective careers.
2017 saw the return of Adam as their front man with the release of yet another single, “Facewaves” on Nov. 3rd 2017. Along with the song’s release came another release date for their new record, January 19th, 2018; information that their most avid fans had been waiting patiently for.
Their new song was also released just in time for the start of a midwest, Canada, and east coast tour with instrumental quintet Arch Echo called “The Tendonitis Tour”, in support of their own debut self titled release. From Nov 3rd to the 18th Aviations brought their unique brand of “cozy metal” to new fans young and old, building up anticipation for their recently announced follow up to 2012’s A Declaration of Sound.
The tour proved there is a welcome audience for what’s to come, so stay tuned as Aviations prepares to release more music, artwork, videos, and content in support of their new album “The Light Years”, available January 19th, 2018.
